St. Francis Wood keeps a low profile behind its gateways. Utility lines are buried underground and businesses are banned. This quiet, residential neighborhood of impressively large homes on generously sized lots is built on the'city beautiful plan" promoted by popular architect of the time, Daniel Burnham. Developed in the 1920s for the affluent families of San Francisco, with homes designed by the prominent architects of the day, including Julia Morgan, the showplace homes of St Francis Wood range in style from Normandy farmhouse to Spanish Mission, Georgian, and Tudor. The landscape architects Olmstead Brothers laid out the curving streets along 175 acres below Mt Davidson, and designed sunken gardens, loggias, fountains and pools to be reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance.
While businesses are prohibited, Stonestown Mall and the commercial district of West Portal provide convenient access to shopping. St Francis Wood is close to 19th Avenue that connects San Francisco to the airport and Silicon Valley to the south, and Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and Marin to the north. The M-Ocean View and K-Ingleside street car lines takes residents to City College, San Francisco State, and West Portal, where commuters can connect to downtown destinations. Stern Grove, with its beloved redwoods and summer concert series is nearby.
Public schools nearby include San Francisco State University and Lowell High School, one of the best public High schools in the state, and the most sought after in the city.
